Biography
Their work analyses and responds to contemporary digital life, approaching its ethics and politics with dark humour.
Their work has been featured in several solo exhibitions, including What Has Been Seen, Phi Foundation for Contemporary Art, Montreal (2019); Data Doubles, Team Gallery, Los Angeles (2019); Abuse Standards Violations, Carroll / Fletcher Gallery, London (2016); I Would Prefer Not to Include My Name, Essex Flowers, New York (2015); and Reality is Overrated, Postmasters Gallery, New York (2010). Among their group exhibitions are snap+share, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2019); ANTI, 6th Athens Biennale (2018); Catastrophe and the Power of Art, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2018); I Was Raised on the Internet, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2018); Biennale für aktuelle Fotografie, Germany (2017); Islands, Constellations & Galapagos, Yokohama Triennale, Japan (2017); 20th Biennale of Sydney (2016); and Artists’ Film International, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2016).
The artists took part in a collaborative project that organised Don't Follow the Wind, a long-term exhibition housed in the irradiated Fukushima exclusion zone (2015–present). The exhibition will remain inaccessible to the general public until the radiation dissipates.
Their work can be found in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, US; and the Bass Museum of Art, Miami, among others.
Born in 1976 in Brescia, Italy, Eva and Franco Mattes live and work in New York.
