Alia Farid

Biography

Through a multidisciplinary practice that ranges from writing and drawing to film, sculpture, and installation, Alia Farid‘s work gives visibility to narratives that are obscured by hegemonic power.

Farid’s work has been presented in solo exhibitions at Kunstinstituut Melly (formerly known as Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art) (2020); Portikus, Frankfurt am Main (2019). Among her group exhibitions are Afterglow, 7th Yokohama Triennial, Japan (2020); Between The Sun and The Moon, 2nd Lahore Biennial (2020); Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991-2011, MoMA PS1, USA (2019); Imagined Borders, 12th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2018); Enchanted Bodies/Fetish for Freedom, Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo, Italy (2018); Gaudiopolis – Attempts at a Joyful Society, Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, Germany (2018); Kenosis, Fotonoviembre: Festival Internacional de Fotografía de Tenerife, Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain (2017); 20th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, São Paulo (2017); Incerteza Viva, 32nd Bienal de São Paulo (2016); and Building Imaginary Bridges Over Hard Ground, Marker 2015, Art Dubai (2015).

Farid received a Visual Arts Production Grant from the Arab Fund for Culture and Arts, Beirut (2018) and an Art Jameel Commission, Dubai (2018). She has participated in residencies at marra.tein, Beirut (2016); Cité internationale des arts, Paris (2015); Edgeware Road Project, Serpentine Gallery Centre for Possible Studies, London (2015); Davidoff Art Initiative, Altos de Chavón, La Romana, Dominican Republic (2015); and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha (2014).

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico, San Juan (2006); Master of Science in Visual Studies from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US (2008) and Masters in Museum Studies and Critical Theory from MACBA, Museu d’Art Contemporani deBarcelona (2012).

Born in 1985 in Kuwait, she currently lives and works between Kuwait and Puerto Rico.
