Biography
Hannah Feldman is Associate Professor of Art History and core faculty in Middle Eastern and North African Studies as well as Comparative Literary Studies at Northwestern University, Evanston, US. Her research centres on late modern and contemporary art and visual culture.
Supported with a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Art History Publication Initiative, her first book, From a Nation Torn: Decolonizing Art and Representation in France (Duke, 2014), traces the theorisation of art, violence, spectacle and the writing of history in France during the decolonial wars that marked the 1960s, especially the Algerian War of Independence. She is also the author of numerous articles about contemporary art and visual culture in Europe, North America and the Middle East and has written for publications such as Artforum, Art Journal, Frieze, nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, October, Third Text and Revue Zamân as well as exhibition catalogues published by the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Kunsthalle Zürich, Portikus, Museet for Samtidskunst, Whitney Museum of American Art, Kaph Books in Lebanon and the Renaissance Society in Chicago, among others. From 2008 to 2010, Feldman was Chair of the Art Journal editorial board.
Feldman is Senior Scholar in Residence at the Core Program, Glassell School of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (2018–2020). As an Andrew W. Mellon New Directions Fellow, she pursued advanced studies in the anthropologies of governmentality and space at the University of Chicago (2014–2016). She is dedicated to the cultivation of alternative and new forms of art historical writing and scholarly presentation, and she considers her work as a PhD advisor and teacher significant aspects of her scholarly practice. She holds a PhD from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University.
Born in Boston, she currently lives and works in Chicago.
