Dirk Fleischmann

Biography

Dirk Fleischmann completed his studies at the Städelschule art academy, Frankfurt, in 2002. Fleischmann is currently based in South Korea where he teaches at Cheongju University and hosts the Black Sheep Lectures, a programme of artist talks at Artsonje Center in Seoul.

Fleischmann’s art projects use business models as strategies for exploring prevalent economic trends. The Artist creates experimental, fully functioning micro-scale models that operate within the same field of practice as multinational corporations. By inhabiting and participating in the same field as these mega-structures, Fleischmann creates temporary alternative conditions of service, trade or production that critically confront the logic and practices of these corporations.

Fleischmann’s previous projects which have taken the form of business enterprises include, a kiosk operation, trailer rental, reforestation farm, game show, fashion label, and experimentations with solar energy production, chicken egg resale and virtual real estate.

Fleischmann’s recent solo shows include Limuranin, Kaesong, und Rosario, Bielefelder Kunstverein, Bielefeld, Germany (2010); The Invisible of the Visible, Front Row and Charles Lim Studio, Singapore (2008); Real Estate, Alternative Space Pool, Seoul, South Korea (2007) and The Black Cat, rraum, Frankfurt (2005).

His work has been presented in group exhibitions including The Real DMZ Project, SAMUSO (Space for Contemporary Art), Seoul, South Korea (2012); On the metaphor of growth, Kunstverein Hannover, Sophienstrasse, Germany (2011); Memories of the Future, Leeum Museum of Art, Seoul (2010), The Second Order, Space Hamilton, Seoul (2010); It takes something to make something, Portikus, Frankfurt (2007) and Lapdogs of the Bourgeoisie, Gasworks Gallery, London (2006). Fleischmann has also participated in international biennials and festivals including, the Gwangju Design Biennale - Design is Design is not Design (2011) and Manifesta 4, Frankfurt (2002).
