Annie Fletcher

Biography

Annie Fletcher is the Director of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (2019–present).
She is interested in how and whether the mode of the exhibition, or the encounter with art, can generate relevant shared civic space today.

Previously, she was chief curator at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Netherlands (2008–2018), where she was also a tutor at its Design Academy, and has extensive leadership experience in the contemporary arts.

Her curatorial projects include the large-scale travelling museum retrospective of The Otolith Group titled Xenogenesis, first shown at the Van Abbemuseum (2019); Frontier Imaginaries Trade Markings, a collaborative research project led by Vivian Ziherl (2018); Journeys without Arrivals, a solo exhibition of Qiu Zhijie (2017); Becoming More, a 10-day collaborative project with DAI (2017); A Republic of Art, Van Abbemuseum (2015–2016); and El Lissitzky: The Artist and the State, IMMA, Dublin (2015). Other projects include solo exhibitions or presentations with Ahmet Ögut, Hito Steyerl, Sheela Gowda, David Maljkovic, Jo Baer, Jutta Koether, Deimantas Narkevičius, Minerva Cuevas, and the long-term projects, Be(com)ing Dutch (2006–2009) and Cork Caucus (2005) with Charles Esche. She was co-founder and co-director of the rolling curatorial platform If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution with Frederique Bergholtz and Tania Elstgeest.

Fletcher was a tutor at de Appel, Amsterdam, and the Dutch Art Institute (DAI), and regularly works with art institutions around the world including SALT Istanbul; New Museum, New York; L’Internationale network and de Appel Art Centre, Amsterdam. In 2012, she was the curator of Ireland’s contemporary art biennale EVA International and has been a member of international juries, including the Turner Prize (2014); and the selection committee for the Irish Pavilion at Venice Biennale (2016).

She studied history of art and modern history at Trinity College, Dublin (1994) and earned an MA in History of Art from Goldsmiths, University of London (1999).

Fletcher was born in 1971 in Dublin where she continues to live and work.
