Biography
Fozia Ismail (b. 1980, Kuwait City) is the founder of Arawelo Eats, a platform examining politics, identity and colonialism through East African food. Ismail has worked with several cultural institutions, including the London School of Economics, Museum of London and Tate Modern. Her work has been published by the Oxford Symposium on Food & Cookery and also featured in media outlets such as Observer Food Magazine and BBC Radio 4 Food Programme. Beyond her critical exploration of life through food, she collaborates with Ayan Cilmi on the dhaqan collective, a feminist art initiative of Somali women based in Bristol. As studio residents at Spike Island and members of Pervasive Media Studio, they prioritise co-creation, collaboration and imaginative futures to resist threats to cultural heritage in the Somali community.
