Biography

Futurefarmers are an international collective of artists, activists, farmers and architects who work together to animate the possible. They use various media to destabilise logics of ‘certainty’. They deconstruct systems such as food policies, public transport and rural farming networks to visualise and understand the intrinsic logics of these systems. Through this disassembly, new narratives emerge, reconfiguring the principles that once dominated these systems. Futurefarmers often provide playful entry points and tools for participants to gain insight into deeper fields of enquiry — not only to imagine, but to participate in and initiate change in the places we live.

Futurefarmers are the lead artists of Flatbread Society, a permanent public artwork in one of the common areas of Oslo, and Seed Journey, their most recent project. Their work has been exhibited at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Whitney Biennial, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Venice Architecture Biennale. Collectively, they have received a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship, Fleischaker Award and Creative Capital Grants.

To make Seed Mast and ARE YOU RECEIVING ME? possible, Futurefarmers assembled at Sharjah Biennial 13 as Amy Franceschini, Pieter Heremans, Martin Lundberg, Joe Riley, Audrey Snyder, Michael Swaine, Michael Taussig and Marthe Van Dessel.

Founded in 1994, Futurefarmers live and work between the United States and Belgium.

This group was part of Sharjah Biennial 13.
