Lamya Gargash

Overview

Photographer and filmmaker Lamya Gargash’s work examines inhabited and abandoned spaces in the UAE in an exploration of modernity, mortality and identity. In the context of rapid modernization and change, she seeks to capture the subtle beauty and melancholy of human presence.

Gargash's works have been presented in a number of solo shows, including Sahwa (2020), Traces (2014) and Through the Looking Glass (2012), all at The Third Line, Dubai; and Presence, Galleria Marabini, Bologna, Italy (2012). Among her group exhibitions are Architecture of Loneliness, Warehouse421, Abu Dhabi (2018); Tribe: Contemporary Photography from the Arab World, American University, Washington, DC (2018); Emirati Expressions: Conventions of Arts, Manarat Al Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi (2015); Works from the Sharjah Art Foundation Collection, Former 4711 factory, Cologne, Germany (2014); and I exist (in some way), Bluecoat, Liverpool (2013).

Gargash has also participated in several film festivals, including the Locarno Film Festival; Osaka Film Festival; Festival Cinéma Arabe, Amsterdam; Malmö Arab Film Festival; and Dubai International Film Festival. Her work is part of the permanent collections of Sharjah Art Foundation and the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah.
