Biography
Alexander Gray is Owner and Principal of Alexander Gray Associates, a contemporary art gallery in New York, established in 2007. Through exhibitions, research, and artist representation, the Gallery spotlights artistic movements and artists who emerged in the mid- to late-Twentieth Century. Influential in cultural, social, and political spheres, these artists are notable for creating work that crosses geographic borders, generational contexts and artistic disciplines. Since opening in 2007, the Gallery has presented celebrated exhibitions with Siah Armajani, Sergei Eisenstein, Jack Whitten, Melvin Edwards, Lorraine O'Grady, Joan Semmel, Harmony Hammond, Luis Camnitzer, Regina Silviera, and Coco Fusco; the Gallery represents the estates of Hugh Steers, Hassan Sharif, and Jack Tworkov.
Prior to establishing the Gallery with co-founder David Cabrera, he held numerous leadership positions in the arts, including Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialogue; Artpace San Antonio; Art Matters Foundation; the National Campaign for Freedom of Expression; Visual AIDS; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. He is a trustee of the Archipenko Foundation, dedicated to the legacy of sculptor Alexander Archipenko, and Art Matters, a foundation that awards fellowships to artists working with social and political issues. In addition to his work in the arts, Gray is an active supporter of animal rights and political issues concerning the Hudson Valley.
