Biography
The work of conceptual artist Deniz Gül examines the dynamics of power, appearance and representation through objects, language and symbolism. Experimenting with a variety of organic and inorganic materials as well as permutations of sound and language, she explores interactions between materials and concepts and ways they coalesce to establish a presence.
Solo exhibitions include Loyelow, The Pill, Istanbul (2016); B.I.M.A.B.K.R., Galeri Manâ, Istanbul (2013) and 5 Person Bufet, Arter, Istanbul (2011), which was completed as a collaborative performance in Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago (2015). Gül’s work has also been featured in group exhibitions such as Sharjah Biennial 13 (2017); House of Wisdom, Dzialdov, Berlin (2017); 14th Istanbul Biennial (2015); Modes of Address, Salzburger Kunstverein, Salzburg, Austria (2012); Divercity. Learning from Istanbul, Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw (2010); Istanbul Traverseé, Palais des Beaux Arts, Lille, France (2009) and Occasional Cities: Post-it City and Other Forms of Temporality, Centre de Cultura Contemporània, Barcelona (2008).
Gül received support for her work from the SAHA Project Support Program, SAHA Association, Istanbul (2014) and Independent Projects Awards, CEC ArtsLink, New York (2014). She was also invited to participate in residencies at Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago (2012); Künstlersymposiums ORTung, Salzburger Kunstverein, Salzburg (2011); Villa Waldberta, Munich (2010) and Tokyo Wonder Site (2008).
She studied at the American Collegiate Institute (ACI), Izmir, Turkey (2000) and received her Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts and Communication Design from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Sabanci University (FASS), Istanbul (2004).
Born in 1982 in Izmir, she currently lives and works in Istanbul.
