Shilpa Gupta

Biography

Contemporary artist Shilpa Gupta has engaged with art in its participatory, interactive and public dimensions for over two decades. Her work makes visible the aporias and incommensurabilities in the emerging national public sphere in India, which include gender and class barriers, religious differences, the continued power of repressive state apparatuses, and the seductions of social homogeneity and deceptive ideas of public consensus enabled by emerging mediascapes.

Her work has been exhibited at Karlskirche, Kassel (2017); Kathmandu Triennal, Nepal (2017); Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2017); Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebaek, Denmark (2016); Musée de design et d'arts appliqués contemporains, Lausanne (2016); Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi (2016); 12th Havana Biennial, Cuba (2015); Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China (2015); 8th Berlin Biennale (2014); Sharjah Biennale 11 (2013); Arnolfini – Center for Contemporary Arts, Bristol, UK (2012); Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, US (2010); Yokohama Triennale (2008) and Liverpool Biennale (2006).

Gupta designed the book dates.sites. Project Cinema City, Bombay/Mumbai (2012), edited by Madhusree Dutta. She has co-facilitated Crossovers & Rewrites: Borders over Asia Museum of Contemporary Art, World Social Forum, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2005) and Aar Paar (with Huma Mulji), a public art exchange project between India and Pakistan held in Mumbai and Karachi (2002–2006).

Gupta studied sculpture at the Sir J. J. School of Fine Arts, Mumbai (1992–1997). She was born in 1976 in Mumbai, where she continues to live and work.
