Overview

Amira Hanafi has worked in diverse capacities in the cultural field for over 15 years as an artist, writer, teacher, curator and arts administrator. She grew up as an Arab in America and returned to Egypt in 2010 to compile a psychogeography of Cairo, featuring insider and outsider perspectives. In January 2011, she began working with Artellewa Art Space in Giza, Egypt, administrating the space and its projects. She is committed to values of social justice, self-determination and collaboration, developing projects with these principles in mind. Hanafi earned her MFA in 2008 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a BA in Political Science from Rutgers University in 2000. She is the author of two books, Forgery and Minced English and has exhibited her work to audiences in the United States and the Arab world.
