Biography

Hasan Hujairi is an artist, composer and researcher whose works explore the intersection between histories on the verge of loss, the conditionality of music and art pedagogy, and the historiographies of outsiders. As an activist, he works to make technical texts on contemporary music and audio software available in the Arabic language.

Hujairi is a curator at Al Riwaq Art Space, Manama (2011–2012, 2018–present). He has served as co-editor for the electronic and experimental music section of the magazine since 2017. Previously, he held the position of Associate Researcher at the University of Exeter (2009–2010) and Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo (2005–2009).

He has presented several performances, workshops and lectures, both locally and internationally, including the workshop Duck, Duck, Telephone, Trumpet, Beirut Art Center (2016); the lecture/performance Being Traditional, Being Contemporary, Onomatopoeia The Music Hub, Beirut (2015) and the performance Threshold / Manifesto, Noise from the Middle East, New York University Abu Dhabi (2014).

Among Hujairi’s numerous grants and scholarships are a music grant for Symphonies of the Self: Preserving the Musical Legacy of Majeed Marhoon, Arab Fund for Art and Culture, Beirut (2016–2017); Global Scholarship I, Seoul National University (2013–2016) and Art Major Faculty ‘Explore K-Arts’ Cultural Partnership Initiative Scholarship, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea, Seoul (2012).

He received a master’s degree in economic history from Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo (2009) and a doctoral degree in music composition from Seoul National University (2018).

Hujairi was born in 1982 in Manama, where he continues to live and work.
