Biography
Working primarily in film, video and performance, Ho Tzu Nyen has developed recent works into environmental multimedia installations. He appropriates the structures of epic myths to invoke their grandeur and reveal the narratives as fiction- and reality-machines.
His works have been exhibited at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2011, 2017); Sharjah Art Foundation (2016); Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2015); Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2015); Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain (2015); 6th Moscow Biennale (2015); 10th Shanghai Biennale (2014); 2nd Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2014); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2013); Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2012); Singapore Pavilion, 54th Venice Biennale (2011); Artspace, Sydney (2011); 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane (2009) and 26th São Paulo Biennale (2004).
His theatrical works have been presented at the Asian Arts Theatre, Gwangju (2015); Wiener Festwochen, Vienna (2014) and Singapore Arts Festival (2006, 2008). His films have been screened at film festivals in Berlin (2015), Sundance, Salt Lake City, US (2012) and Cannes (2009).
Ho was the recipient of the Grand Prize of the Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Signature Art Prize (2015) and a DAAD scholarship in Berlin (2014–2015). He earned a bachelor's degree in creative arts from the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne (2001) and a master's degree in Southeast Asian studies from the National University of Singapore (2007).
Ho was born in 1976 in Singapore, where he continues to live and work.

Ho Tzu Nyen’s ongoing project The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia (2012–present) poses the following question: What is Southeast Asia? In the modern sense, the term was introduced during the Second World War in a 1941 book by British-born colonial public servant John Sydenham Furnivall.
