Biography

Dale Hudson is interested in postcolonial and transnational film and digital media, media and environmentalism, and film and digital media in the Gulf.

An Associate Professor of Film and New Media at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), Hudson is also the coordinator for films from the Gulf for the Middle East Studies Association (MESA) Film Festival and the Digital Curator for the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF), an interdisciplinary cross media festival held annually in Ithaca, US. He has curated and co-curated 12 exhibitions of digital media for FLEFF, including Networked Disruptions (2019), Invisible Geographies (2018) and Interface/Landscape (2017).

Hudson has authored and co-authored two books and more than 30 articles, and he has presented more than 60 papers at academic conferences in the United States, Canada, East Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia and at a number of arts institutions, including Alserkal Avenue in Dubai and Shoof in Jeddah. He received a grant for the academic conference titled Film and Visual Media in the Gulf: Images, Infrastructures, and Institutions Connecting Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and the World, which was co-convened with Alia Yunis at the New York University Abu Dhabi Institute (2018).

He holds a BA from Bucknell University, Lewisburg, US (1987); an MA from New York University (1991); and a PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, US (2004).

Hudson lives and works in Abu Dhabi.

Sharjah Film Platform Talks and Workshops

In parallel with the screening of over 50 films, Sharjah Film Platform (SFP) presents a programme of talks on cinema and artists’ moving image—from panel discussions to in-conversation sessions—that address the creative and conceptual aspects of filmmaking and the latest debates in the film and television industry. Workshops on various topics related to cinema, from acting improvisation to film criticism, will also be offered.
