Biography
Ann Veronica Janssens’s experimental work emphasises in-situ installations and the use of very simple or intangible materials, such as light, sound or artificial fog. Her work engages the viewer’s experience by articulating different stages of fragility, whether visual, physical, temporal or psychological.
Among her recent solo exhibitions are Ann Veronica Janssens, Kiasma, Helsinki (2018); Ann Veronica Janssens, De Pont Museum, Tilburg, the Netherlands (2018); mars, Institut d’art contemporain, Rhône-Alpes, France (2017); Ann Veronica Janssens, Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, US (2016); yellowbluepink, Wellcome Collection, London (2015) and A, S.M.A.K., Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent, Belgium (2015). Since 1985, her work has also been featured in numerous group shows, including the recent exhibitions Space Shifters, Hayward Gallery, London (2018); Le musée absent, WIELS, Brussels (2017); Illumination, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Humlebæk, Denmark (2016); Another Minimalism, Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (2015); Zehn Räume, drei Loggien und ein Saal, Sprengel Museum, Hanover, Germany (2015) and Formes simples, Centre Pompidou Metz, France (2014).
Janssens represented Belgium in 1999 at the 45th Venice Biennale with Michel François, and her work has been featured in many other international biennials, such as Manifesta 10, St Petersburg, Russia (2014); 18th Biennale of Sydney (2012); Manifesta 8, Murcia, Spain (2011); 5th Seoul International Media Art Biennale (2008); 11th Biennale of Sydney (1998); 5th International Istanbul Biennial (1997) and 22nd International Biennale of São Paulo (1994).
She received a public commission for Place des Plainpalais, Geneva as part of the public art project Neon Parallax, for which she created the neon installation l’odrre n’a pas d’ipmrotncae (2012).
She attended the École de la Cambre National School of Visual Arts in Brussels. Born in 1956 in Folkestone, UK, she currently lives and works in Brussels.
