Biography

Jazael Olguín Zapata (b. 1987, Mexico City) seeks the crossroads between genres and media—portraits that insinuate landscapes, still lifes that are comix, the search in the fertile space between figuration and abstraction and the interstices between drawing and painting. Blurring the boundaries between genres, spaces and disciplines, Zapata fuses timeframes and art history references with vernacular imaginaries from fragmented and fluid identity narratives. He enjoys overflowing the limits of painting and insisting on its relevance within contemporary visual culture as a way of producing images that address the present context of our localities and the world. Zapata has worked and collaborated on a number of shows and publications. He was invited to document, through his drawings, conversations and assemblies for the Organization as a Medium of Contemporary Art project at Kunstraum der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, Germany (2023) as well as documenta fifteen (2022) as part of Arts Collaboratory.
