Biography
Fernando José Pereira's video installation work for the 2009 Sharjah Biennial, Remote control, remove control (2008-09), was a very specific continuation of these creative and research interests. For this project the artist made two videos, one used images taken in winter from an internet webcam in Bolungarvik, a village in the far north of Iceland; the second used similar images but ones that were taken on location during a summer visit by the artist himself. The two works were then projected in a replicated Icelandic building specially constructed in the Sharjah Arts area. Strangely out of place with its arctic atmosphere, the project also imposed a fundamental locational paradox.
Pereira has had solo presentations at Gallery Adhoc, Vigo, Spain (2010), Northern Stages, Newcastle, UK (2010) and Museu do Neo-Realismo, Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal (2009). He has also shown at Fundació Foto Colectania, Barcelona, Spain (2010) and Transmediale, Berlin, Germany (2009).
Born in 1961 in Porto, Portugal, where he currently lives and works, Pereira graduated with a PhD in Fine Arts from the University of Vigo, Galicia, Spain in 2002. He is also founder and co-director of the longstanding online collaborative project, Virose, which explores theory and ideas on the relationship between technology and art.
