Biography

Jumana Emil Abboud’s practice is grounded in the Palestinian cultural landscape. Encompassing drawing, installation, video and performance, her work draws on traditions of folklore and storytelling that have animated the community over generations. She explores personal and collective memory and practices of sharing and re-telling to address experiences of loss, longing and the impact of dispossession and annexation. Abboud’s work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including The Unbearable Halfness of Being, Cample Line, Scotland (2023); Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art (2023); Biennale of Sydney (2022); documenta fifteen (2022); Common Grounds: Story / Heritage, Casco Art Institute, Utrecht (2020); The Jerusalem Show (2018); Sharjah Biennale (2017, 2011, 2009, 2005); and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2016). She has also participated in art residencies, including Sakiya – Art/Science/Agriculture, Ein Qiniya (2020–2021); Delfina Foundation, London (2012, 2015) and Arts Initiative Tokyo (2005, 2008).
