Biography
Karim Sultan is a curator and artist whose works act as a kind of travelogue, both physical and metaphorical. Combining electronic and instrumental approaches, including the computer, field recordings, oud and guitar, he creates experimental sound, music and performances that are imbued with Arab and regional influences.
Sultan has performed locally and internationally as part of programmes and festivals such as Alserkal Programming Artist Commissions, Alserkal Avenue, Dubai (2016, 2017); Other Worlds: Out There Sounds from Out There, Blackpool, UK (2016); REUSE, Kuwait (2016); Sikka Art Fair, Dubai (2016); Something Else, Off Biennale Cairo (2015) and Shubbak: A Window on Contemporary Arab Culture, London (2015).
Sultan is director and curator at Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah, an independent initiative for managing, preserving and exhibiting an extensive collection of modern and contemporary Arab art. He was also a contributing editor of Kalimat magazine, a platform established in 2010 for Arab creatives to engage in thought and action.
Born in Kuwait, Sultan has lived in Cairo, Toronto and Sharjah, where he now works.
