Biography
Often based on performances and constructed scenarios, Meiro Koizumi’s video installations investigate the boundaries between public and private, which are of particular importance in his native Japanese culture.
His recent solo exhibitions include Battlelands, Minneapolis Institute of Fine Art, US (2019), White Rainbow, London (2018) and Pérez Art Museum Miami (2018); Le nouveau soufflé après la tempête, MAC VAL, Val-de-Marne, France (2018); Today My Empire Sings, Vacant, Tokyo (2017) and De Hallen Haarlem, the Netherlands (2016); Portrait of a Failed Silence, Museo Universitario Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City (2015); Trapped Voice Would Dream of Silence, Arts Maebashi, Maebashi, Japan (2015); Project Series 99: Meiro Koizumi, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013) and Human Opera, San Art, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (2012). His work has been shown in group exhibitions at the Shanghai Biennale (2018); Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane (2018); Daimler Contemporary Berlin (2018); Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Aichi, Japan (2018); National Museum of Art, Osaka (2018); Asian Art Biennale, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art, Taichung (2017); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Korea (2017); La Biennale Montréal (2016) and Sharjah Art Foundation (2016), among others.
His works are part of the collections at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate, London; M+, Hong Kong; Kadist Art Foundation, Paris/San Francisco; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; De Hallen Haarlem, the Netherlands; Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; Frac Poitou-Charentes, France; Ishikawa Collection, Japan; Toyota Municipal Museum, Aichi; Taguchi Collection, Japan; Takahashi Collection, Tokyo and National Museum of Art, Osaka.
Koizumi holds a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the International Christian University, Tokyo (1999) and a bachelor's degree in fine art from the London Institute, Chelsea College of Art and Design (2002). He also attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (2006). Born in Gunma, Japan (1976), Koizumi currently lives and works in Yokohama, Japan.
