Biography
Donghee Koo’s work across multiple media ranges from photography, digital images and videos to sculpture and spatial installations. Her practice involves a process-based dialogue with space and often combines objects, found materials and video as a means of externalising interior impressions.
Koo’s solo exhibitions include CrossXPollination, Royal Gallery, Seoul (2016); Night Theft, Audio Visual Pavilion, Seoul (2014); No dog walking on the roof, Doosan Gallery, New York (2012); Close Studio, Open Café, Tokyo Wonder Site (2007) and The Day Off The Duty Free, Academie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (2006). Her work has also been shown in group exhibitions at both Korean and international art institutions such as Sharjah Biennial 13 (2017); National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2016); Tate Modern, London (2015); Korean Film Archive Cinematheque KOFA, Seoul (2012); Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (2012); Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2011); PLATEAU, Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul (2011); Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, Australia (2011); Nanjing Museum, China (2008) and SCHIRN Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2011). Koo’s work is part of the collections of the Seoul Museum of Art; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, among others.
She was a finalist for the Korean Artist Prize, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (2014) and was awarded both the 13th Hermès Art Award, Hermès Foundation Missulsang, Seoul (2012) and the first Doosan Yongkang Art Award, Doosan Art Foundation, Seoul (2010).
Koo received a BFA from the College of Fine Arts, Hongik University, Seoul (1998) and an MFA from Yale University School of Art, New Haven, US (2000). She also participated in the Doosan Residency, New York (2010) and Tokyo Wonder Site Artist-in-Residence Program (2007), among others.
Koo was born in 1974 in Seoul, where she currently lives and works.
