Biography
Mire Lee is best known for her kinetic sculptures employing materials such as electric motors, PVC hoses, silicon, lubricants, grease and steel rods. She creates raw compositions that recall the fleshiness of limbs or the insides of the human body.
Lee’s work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including War is Won by Sentiment Not by Soldiers, Insa Art Space, Seoul (2014); Front View of Omissions onground_jisangso, Seoul (2014) and Roadway from Mullae to Salon Vit, Salon Vit, Cheong-ju, South Korea (2013). Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Homesession, Barcelona (2017); Arko Art Center, Seoul (2017); Doosan Gallery, Seoul (2017); Kukje Gallery, Seoul (2017); Hapjeongjigu, Seoul (2017); Ilmin Museum of Arts, Seoul (2017); Gallery175, Seoul (2017); Cake Gallery, Seoul (2016); SeMA Biennale: Mediacity Seoul (2016); Cité internationale des arts, Paris (2016); Rue Geoffrey l'Asnier 20, Paris (2016); Sejong Center, Seoul (2015); Space 413, Seoul (2015); Take Out Drawings, Seoul (2015); Trunk Gallery, Seoul (2014) and Seoul Art Space Seogyo (2013).
She has participated in residencies at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam (2018); Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA Nanji Residency) (2017) and Cité internationale des arts, Paris (2015). She was awarded the ARKO Young Art Frontier Grant, Arts Council Korea (2014).
Lee earned a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Sculpture at the Seoul National University College of Fine Arts (2012) and a graduate degree in media art from the same institution (2013).
She was born in 1988 in Seoul, where she continues to live and work.
