Biography
Curator and art historian Arshiya Lokhandwala is the founder of Lakeeren Gallery, Mumbai, and her curatorial work focuses mainly on biennials and large-scale exhibitions. She writes on globalisation, feminism, performance and new media.
Among her curatorial projects are The Future Is Here: Art and Technology in a Millennial Age, Kamalnayan Bajaj Art Gallery, Mumbai (2019); Given Time: The Gift and Its Offerings, Gallery Odyssey, Mumbai (2016); After Midnight: Indian Modernism to Contemporary India 1947/1997, Queens Museum, New York (2015); Of Gods and Goddesses, Cinema, Cricket: The New Cultural Icons of India, Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (2011); and Against All Odds: A Contemporary Response to the Historiography of Archiving Collecting and Museums in India, Lalit Kala Academy, Delhi (2011). She has curated more than 150 exhibitions at Lakeeren Gallery, presenting an international programme of artists from India, Pakistan, Iran, Germany and Mexico.
She received the Curator of the Year award from India Today for her exhibition India Re-Worlded: Seventy Years of Investigating a Nation, Gallery Odyssey, Mumbai (2017), and the Charles Wallace India Trust Award for an MA in Creative Curating at Goldsmiths, University of London (2001).
She completed a BA and MA in Sociology (1986 and 1991, respectively) and a PhD from Cornell University, Ithaca, US.
Lokhandwala lives and works between Mumbai and New York.
