Biography
Media artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer’s interactive installations represent the intersection of architecture and performance art. He creates platforms for public participation using technologies such as robotic lights, digital fountains, computerised surveillance, media walls and telematic networks. Inspired by phantasmagoria, carnival, and animatronics, his light and shadow works are ‘anti-monuments for alien agency’.
Lozano-Hemmer’s work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions, including Latidos, Arte Abierto, Mexico City (2020); Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Presencia Inestable, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, Mexico (2019); Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Pulse, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (2018); Voice Array, Mexican Cultural Institute Washington, DC (2018); Solar Equation, Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (2018); and Decision Forest, The Amorepacific Museum of Art, Seoul (2018). Among his group exhibitions are Untitled Art Fair, Galería Max Estrella, San Francisco (2020); School Photos and Their Afterlives, Hood Museum of Art, Hanover, US (2020); La Tête dans le Nuage, Musée de la Civilisation, Quebec City (2019); The Future and the Arts, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2019); Arts of the World, Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (2019); Writing the History of the Future, Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe, Germany (2019); and 12th Shanghai Biennale (2018).
Lozano-Hemmer has received numerous awards, including Compagnon des Arts et des Lettres du Québec, Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec (2016); Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario (2015); Event of the Year: Open Air Philadelphia, Philadelphia Geek Awards, US (2013); Premio Mentes Quo + Discovery, Quo Magazine and Discovery Channel, Mexico City (2013); Joyce Award, The Joyce Foundation, Chicago (2012); and National Endowment for the Arts grant for Open Air, Washington (2011).
He holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Chemistry from Concordia University, Montreal (1989).
Born in 1967 in Mexico City, Lozano-Hemmer currently lives and works between Montreal and Madrid.
