Biography
Maha Maamoun is an artist who works primarily with the mediums of text, photography and video. She is interested in examining the form, function and currency of common cultural, visual and literary images. She also works on publishing and curatorial projects.
Maamoun's work has been shown widely in international exhibitions, including The Law of Existence, Sursock Museum, Beirut (2017); NO TO THE INVASION: Breakdowns and Side-Effects, CCS Bard Galleries, Annandale-on-Hudson, US (2017); Hors Pistes, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (2016); The Time is Out of Joint, Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah and Asia Culture Center, Gwangju (both 2016); Century of Centuries, SALT, Istanbul (2015); Lest the Two Seas Meet, Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2015); The Night of Counting the Years, Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany (2014) and 2026, Turku Museum, Finland (2013). Her work has also been featured in exhibitions at Sharjah Biennial 10 (2011); Philadelphia Museum of Art, US (2010–2011); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2010); Haus der Kunst, Munich (2010); Home Works 5, Beirut (2010); Sharjah Biennial 9 (2009); PhotoCairo4 (2008); Tate Modern, London (2007); Venice Architecture Biennale (2006) and DAK’ART 6, Senegal (2004), among others.
Maamoun curated shows at Sharjah Art Gallery, American University in Cairo (2014); Künstlerhaus, Vienna (2014) and Meeting Points 7, Zagreb, Croatia (2013). She was also the co-curator of PhotoCairo3 (2005) and assistant curator for Meeting Points 5, Berlin (2007).
She is one of the founding members of the Contemporary Image Collective (CiC), established in Cairo in 2004, and she co-founded the independent publishing platform Kayfa-ta in 2013 with Ala Younis.
She was awarded the Jury Prize for her film Domestic Tourism II at Sharjah Biennial 9 (2009).
Born in Oakland in 1972, Maamoun lives and works in Cairo.
