Biography

In her collaborative and discursive projects, artist Mahshid Rafiei applies her own studio tactics to facilitate initiatives that explore anti-institutional strategies and create new possibilities for communities to share resources, both intellectual and material. These projects have so far taken forms that combine critical writing and alternative pedagogical approaches with exhibitions and programming, often moving between (and blurring) public and private spaces.

Rafiei has developed educational and public programming at Mercer Union, Toronto and recently presented and moderated the talks programme SESSION, also at Mercer Union (2018). She maintains an ongoing collaborative practice with DOORS UNLIMITED as well.

She earned a BFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York (2014) and an MA in Communication and Culture from York University, Toronto (2016). In 2015, she received an award from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for her master’s research project.

Born in 1992 in Tehran, she currently lives and works in Toronto.
