Biography
Teresa Margolles holds a degree in forensics, the morgue accurately reflects society, particularly her hometown, where deaths caused by drug-related crime, poverty, political crisis and the government’s brutal military response have devastated communities. She has developed a unique, restrained language in order to speak for her silenced subjects – the victims discounted as ‘collateral damage’ and nameless statistics.
In 2012 Margolles won the Artes Mundi 5 Prize and was one of the laureates awarded by the Prince Claus Fund. Solo exhibitions of her work include La Promesa, Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City, Mexico (2012), Glasgow Sculpture Studios, Scotland (2012), A través…, Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City, Mexico (2012), Frontera, Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany and Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art Bomzano, Italy (2010-2011), Teresa Margolles, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, USA (2010) and the Venice Biennale, Italy (2009).
Her work has also been seen extensively in group exhibitions including México: Inside Out, Modern Art Museum of Forth Worth, Texas (2013), USA, Hay más rutas que la nuestra, Museo Tamayo, Mexico City, Mexico (2013), Former West, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, Germany (2013).
