Biography
Bartomeu Marí has curated numerous exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and published extensively on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. He seeks to provoke wide-ranging conversations on art and history in order to understand the present and envision the future.
Marí works as director of the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI), Perú (2019–present). Previously, he was director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Republic of Korea (2016–2018) and director of the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) (2008–2015). In this institution, he also acted as chief curator (2004 –2007). He curated the Spanish Pavilion at the 51st Venice Biennale (2005) and directed the Centro Internacional de Cultura Contemporánea, Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain (2002–2003) and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (1996–2001). He also served as a curator at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern, Spain (1994–1996) and the Fondation pour l'Architecture, Brussels (1989–1993). Many artists, including Francis Alÿs, Marcel Broodthaers, Carlos Bunga, Janet Cardiff, Alice Creischer, Latifa Echakhch, Raoul Hausmann, Joan Jonas, Frederick Kiesler, Sigalit Landau, Rita McBride, Cildo Meireles, Matt Mullican, Muntadas, Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas, Francis Picabia, Francesc Torres, Eulàlia Valldosera and Lawrence Weiner, have collaborated with him throughout his career.
From 2010 to 2016, Mari served first as Secretary Treasurer, then as President, of CIMAM, the International Committee of Museums and Collections of Modern Art, affiliated with the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and education sciences from the University of Barcelona (1989). Born in 1966 in San José, Ibiza, he lives and works in Lima, Perú.
