Biography
María José Murillo (b. 1989, Arequipa) is an artist and researcher whose practice lies at the intersection of textile art, academia and societal engagement. In 2021, she co-founded the art collective Noqanchis to empower weavers from the Peruvian Andes. She graduated with a BFA in Painting from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (2011) and earned an MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2019). Subsequently, Murillo worked under Nilda Callañaupa at the Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco’s (CTTC) Education Department. In 2022, she received the ICPNA Artus WIELS scholarship, which led to a contemporary art residency in Brussels. She is a member of the Textile Society of America’s Board of Directors since 2023. Her solo exhibitions include Con otros ojos para ver / With other eyes to see at ICPNA, Lima (2023). Murillo has been selected for the Recherches 2024 research residency at TAMAT – Musée de la Tapisserie et des Arts Textiles in Tournai, Belgium.
