Carlos Martiel

Biography

Carlos Martiel is a performance artist whose visceral political critiques address contemporary issues related to censorship, oppression and immigration. Building on Cuban and international histories, he comments on social tensions while both embodying and challenging commonly perceived limits.

Martiel’s performances and exhibitions include Intruder (America), AC Institute, New York (2018); América, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA Performance Art Festival, Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach, US (2018); Mediterráneo, 57th Venice Biennale (2017); We the People, Biennale Internationale de Casablanca, Hassan II Mosque, Morocco (2016); Intersección, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo del Zulia (MACZUL), Maracaibo, Venezuela (2016); La Otra Bienal de Arte, Video Art of Central America and the Caribbean, La Macarena, Bogota, Colombia (2013); 30th Anniversary Havana Biennial, Wilfredo Lam Center of Contemporary Art (2014) and Prodigal Son, Witch House, Liverpool, UK (2010).

Among Martiel’s awards are a grant from the Franklin Furnace Fund (2016), the CIFOS Grants & Commissions Program Award, Cisneros Fontanals Foundation (CIFO) (2014) and the Arte Laguna Prize (2013). He graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts ‘San Alejandro’, Havana (2005-2009) and went on to study at the Cátedra Arte de Conducta (2008–2010), where he received instruction from the artist Tania Bruguera.

Born in 1989 in Havana, he currently lives and works between New York and Havana.
