Biography

Matthew Lutton has directed and created more than 45 productions, ranging from re-inventions of Australian classic stories, grand opera, adaptions of classic novels and dance theatre. He is the Artistic Director and Co-CEO of Melbourne’s second largest theatre company, Malthouse Theatre, where he directs two productions per year and curates the annual programme of events across the theatre’s four stages. Previously, he was Malthouse Theatre’s Associate Director. He founded the Perth-based independent company, ThinIce, at age 17.

Selected credits for Malthouse Theatre include The Return (2022); Because the Night (2021); Cloudstreet, Perth Festival (2020); Solaris (2019); Melancholia (2018); The Real and Imagined History of the Elephant Man (2017); Picnic at Hanging Rock (2016); and On the Misconception of Oedipus (2012). In 2022, he co-directed (with Jason Tamiru) the First Nations play The Return.

He has collaborated with other companies, including Black Swan State Theatre, Perth; Belvoir, Sydney; Sydney Theatre Company; Griffin Theatre, Sydney; West Australian Opera, Perth; New Zealand Opera; and Bavarian State Opera, Munich.

Born in 1984 in Perth, Lutton lives and works in Melbourne.
