Biography

Deeply engaged with social history, culture and race, Rodney McMillian often combines different forms –such as painting, photographs and found objects –in dynamic installations that reveal how past ideas relate to the present.

Mcmillan’s solo exhibitions include the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston ( 2009); The Kitchen, New York (2008); Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Aachen, Germany (2007) and Triple Candie, New York (2005).

His work has been widely exhibited internationally in group exhibitions at venues including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, USA (2014); Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2014); Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, USA (2014); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2013); Sammlung Haubrok, Berlin (2013); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2013); the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2012); Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, USA (2012); Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2011); SITE Santa Fe Biennial, Santa Fe, New Mexico (2011); Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, USA (2010); Aspen Art Museum, USA (2009); the Whitney Biennial, New York (2008); Moscow Biennale, Russia (2007); MoMA PS1, New York (2007); Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, USA (2006); Astrup Fearnley Museum of Art, Oslo, Norway (2006) and Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard Hessel Museum, New York (2006).

Rodney McMillian was born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1969 and he currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He received an MFA in 2002 from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 1998.
