Richie Mehta

Biography

Richie Mehta is a writer and director of feature films, documentaries and long-form films/series for festivals, cinema and online platform play.

His films have been screened at numerous film festivals, most notably the Sundance Film Festival (2019), Toronto International Film Festival (2016), Venice Film Festival (2013) and BFI London Film Festival (2013). His series Delhi Crime (2019), which he both wrote and directed, is now a seven-part Netflix series.

Delhi Crime received four Asian Academy Creative Awards (2019)—Best Drama Series, Best Original Programme by a Streamer/OTT, Best Direction and Best Actress in a Leading Role—as well as Best Drama Series at the iReel Awards India (2019). His film Siddharth (2013) won Best Feature Film at the MOOOV Film Festival, Turnhout, Belgium (2014) and Best Canadian Feature at the Victoria Film Festival (2014). The work was also nominated for three Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Original Screenplay. His film Amal (2007) was voted one of the ten best Canadian films of the decade by Playback magazine and one of the ten best international films of all time by The Times of India (2012). It also won Best Picture at the Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival (2008) and was nominated for six Genie Awards (2009), including Best Picture and Director.

Mehta holds a BA (with honours) from the University of Toronto (2001). He also earned a postgraduate diploma in Advanced Television and Film from Sheridan College, Ontario, Canada (2002).

Born in 1978 in Toronto, Mehta currently lives and works in London.
