Biography

Founded by Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden, Metahaven is a research-based collective working across design, art, filmmaking, teaching and publications. Their work explores the nature of perception, definitions of reality and tensions between the digital and natural worlds.

Solo presentations of Metahaven’s work include Information Skies, Auto Italia South East, London (2016); The Sprawl, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), San Francisco (2015) and Islands in the Cloud, MoMA PS1, New York (2013). Their work has also been featured in group exhibitions such as Sharjah Biennial 13: Tamawuj (2017); Fear & Love, Design Museum, London (2016); Dream Out Loud, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2016); The Eighth Climate (What Does Art Do?), 11th Gwangju Bienniale, South Korea (2016); All of This Belongs to You, Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2015); Private Settings: Art After the Internet, Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2014); Frozen Lakes, Artists Space, New York (2013) and Immaterial Labour Isn’t Working, Auto Italia South East, London, (2013).

Among Metahaven’s music videos are Home (2014) and Interference (2015), both part of an ongoing collaboration with musician, composer and artist Holly Herndon. Their first full-length documentary, The Sprawl (Propaganda about Propaganda), premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2016). Metahaven’s publications include Black Transparency (2015), Can Jokes Bring Down Governments? (2013) and Uncorporate Identity (2010).

Metahaven was established in 2007 in Amsterdam by Vinca Kruk and Daniel van der Velden. Kruk was born in 1980 in Leiden, and van der Velden in 1971 in Rotterdam.

Metahaven was part of Sharjah Biennial 13.
