Biography
Andrew Norman Wilson is a filmmaker, artist and curator who works in video, photography, performance and sculpture. His work compares historical and contemporary events in order to question corporate hierarchy, the classification of labour, and the uses and effects of technology.
Wilson’s work has been featured in several solo exhibitions, including Lavender Town Syndrome, Ordet, Milan (2020); Hirngespenster, Kunstverein Braunschweig, Germany (2019); SITUATION, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland (2019); Kodak, Document, Chicago (2019); Digital Bodies: Andrew Norman Wilson, MSU Broad, E. Lansing, US (2017); Pretense, Human Resources Los Angeles (2017); and Artificial Selection, Plymouth Rock, Zurich (2015). Among his group exhibitions are Picture Industry, Luma Arles, France (2018); Techne and the Decency of Means, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Germany (2017); Dreamlands, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2017); and the Gwangju Biennial (2016).
Wilson’s work can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre national des arts plastiques, Paris-La Défense; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; Institute of Contemporary Art Miami; Stolbun Collection, Chicago; Collection Lambert, Avignon, France; and Kadist Foundation, Paris.
Among his numerous awards are the Sound and Vision Institute Found Footage Award, International Film Festival Rotterdam (2019), and an Dedalus Foundation Master of Fine Arts Fellowship (2011). Wilson has also participated in several residency programmes, including La Becque Artist in Residence, Vevey, Switzerland (2020); Akademie Schloss Solitude Fellowship, Stuttgart, Germany (2015); and Impakt Artist in Residence, Utrecht, the Netherlands (2013).
Since 2012, he has been visiting faculty at institutions such as The Cooper Union; UCLA; Parsons School of Design; Yale University; Royal Academy of Art, The Hague; and Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki.
Wilson earned a BS in Television, Radio and Film from the Newhouse School of Communications, Syracuse University, US (2006), and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2011).
Born in 1983 in Kennebunkport, US, he currently lives and works in Europe and America.
