Biography
Uriel Orlow is known for single screen film works, lecture performances and modular, multi-media installations that emphasise specific locations and micro-histories and bring different image-regimes and narrative modes into correspondence. His work is concerned with spatial manifestations of memory, blind spots of representation and forms of haunting.
Orlow’s works have been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, both locally and internationally, at The Showroom, London; Castello di Rivoli, Turin, Italy; John Hansard Gallery, University of Southampton, UK; Centre culturel suisse (CCS), Paris; Al Ma'mal Foundation, Jerusalem; Depo, Istanbul; Centre PasquArt, Biel, Switzerland; Spike Island, Bristol, UK; Les Complices, Zurich; Centre PasquArt, Bienne, Switzerland and Prefix ICA, Toronto, among others. His work has also been presented in group exhibitions, including Sharjah Biennial 13 (2017); EVA International, Limerick, Ireland (2014, 2016); British Artists Film and Video, Tate Britain, London (2015); Aichi Triennale, Japan (2013); Manifesta 9, Mexico City (2012); 54th Venice Biennale (2011); 8th Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2011) and 3rd Guangzhou Triennal, China (2008).
He was the recipient of the Sharjah Biennial Prize (2017), City of Zurich Visual Art Prize (2015) and Swiss Art Award, Art Basel (2012). He also participated in a research residency at Para Site, Hong Kong (2016) and Al Ma’mal Foundation, Jerusalem.
Orlow has taught at the Academy of Arts in Zurich since 2010. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the Royal College of Art and a Reader in Fine Art at the University of Westminster in London since 2015.
Born in 1973 in Zurich, he currently lives and works in both London and Zurich.
This person was part of Sharjah Biennial 13 and a recipient of the Sharjah Biennial Prize 2017.
