Biography
Bruno Pacheco’s paintings investigate form, colour and space, inviting viewers to engage in dialogue with particular moments or objects. Often based on imagery from the internet and personal photographs, his paintings draw narrative elements from his subject matter.
Pacheco’s work has been shown in a number of solo exhibitions, including ONE, ampersand, Lisbon (2020); head (red) hand, Hollybush Gardens, London (2019);VAIVÉM, Galeria Quadrum, Lisbon (2018); Cameo, Hollybush Gardens, London (2018); Red was the tone, Filomena Soares, Lisbon (2016); Sunshine and Sentiment, Hollybush Gardens, London (2014); and Mar e Campo em três momentos, Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, Cascais, Portugal (2012). Among his group exhibitions are Against Abstraction, Centro de Artes e Cultura de Ponte de Sor, Lisbon (2018); The Conspiracy of Forms: Works from the Serralves Collection, Terminal de Cruzeiros do Porto de Leixões, Porto, Portugal (2018); The Way Beyond Art, Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Netherlands (2017); Quote/Unquote, Galeria da Câmara Municipal de Portugal, Lisbon (2017); How to (...) things that don’t exist, 31st São Paulo Bienal (2015); and 3rd Beijing International Art Biennale (2008).
Pacheco’s work is part of the collections at Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; KADIST, Paris; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; National Art Gallery, Beijing; Serralves Museum, Porto; Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon; Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Lisbon; United Bank of Switzerland Art Collection, London; and Fundação Ilídio Pinho, Porto.
He participated in the Caribic Residency, Lisbon (2011) and was awarded the Red Mansion Foundation Prize, Royal College of Art, London (2005).
He studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts (1996) and holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in fine arts from Goldsmiths College, University of London (1999 and 2005, respectively).
Born in 1974 in Lisbon, Pacheco currently lives and works between Lisbon and London.
