Biography
Shimabuku’s performances and installations propose new ways of life and new methods of communication. His work seeks to make the familiar strange and is often inspired by personal anecdotes, collective experiences or humorous discoveries made on his travels. Shimabuku has had solo exhibitions at CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain de Bordeaux, France (2011) and daadgalerie, Berlin (2008, 2007), among other venues. His group exhibitions include the Yokohama Triennale, Japan (2011); The Street, Whitechapel, London (2008); Laughing in a Foreign Language, Hayward Gallery, London (2008); São Paulo Biennial, Brazil (2006); Liverpool Biennial, UK (2006); Utopia Station, Venice Biennale, Italy (2003) and Elysian Fields, Centre Pompidou, Paris, France (2000).
Shimabuku received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, California, USA in 1992.
