Biography

Sofiane Zouggar’s work focuses on Algerian identity and sociopolitical issues as well as the relationship between the human condition and information. He makes use of different mediums in his work, including photography and video, sound, movement and interactive installations. Since 2013, he has been working on an archive of the ‘Dark Decade’, the time of the Algerian civil war between 1991 and 2002, by exploring images as traces of memory.

His work has been shown in a number of exhibitions, including Chinafrika.under construction, Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig (2017); Boda Boda Lounge, Pan-African Video Art Festival, Algiers (2016); Bienal de la Imagen en Movimiento, Buenos Aires (2016); Qalandiya International Biennial, Ramallah (2016); La Condition humaine, Festival national de la Photographie d’Art (FESPA), Algiers (2014); The MoMRtA (The Museum of Manufactured Response to Absence), Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMA), Algiers (2014); Dak’Art Biennale, Dakar (2012, 2014); Picturie Générale, Algiers (2013) and World Event Young Artists, Nottingham, UK (2012).
Zouggar graduated in ceramics from the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Algiers (2010).
