Biography
Hito Steyerl is a prolific artist, filmmaker and writer, working at the intersection of art, philosophy and politics. She investigates how sounds and images are transmitted and understood within a politicised global context. Her films and lectures have increasingly addressed the presentational context of art, while her writing has been widely circulated in both academic and art journals.
Her work has been presented in solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2016); Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2015); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2015); Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane(2015); Künstlerhaus Stuttgart(2014); Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2013); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2009) and Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2008), among others. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at the German Pavilion, 56th Venice Biennale (2015); CAC Vilnius, Lithuania (2015); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2015); Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Switzerland (2015); Goethe-Institut Buenos Aires (2014); German Pavilion, 55th Venice Biennale (2013); Taipei Biennial, Taiwan (2010); Gwangju Biennial, South Korea (2010) and documenta 12, Kassel, Germany (2007).
Steyerl studied cinematography and documentary filmmaking at the Academy of Visual Arts, Tokyo (1987-1990) and documentary filmmaking and film theory at the Hochschule fűr Fernsehen und Film, Munich (1992-1998). She also pursued postgraduate studies in philosophy at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna (2001-2003). In addition to making films, she has taught in a number of educational institutions, including Universität der Künste, Berlin; Goldsmiths, University of London; Mälmo Art Academy, Lund, Sweden; Bard College, New York and Helsinki Art Academy.
