Biography
Min Tanaka is an experimental dancer who focuses on the psycho-physical unity of the body. Often collaborating with both Japanese and international intellectuals, scientists and contemporary artists of his time, he has developed innovative and expressive approaches to dance that have expanded and energised the art and cultural community.
Tanaka has performed in a number of exhibitions and other events, including Painting and Weaving Opportunity: Yohji Yamamoto & Yuuka Asakura, Tokyo Opera City (2017); Ten Days Six Nights, BMW Tate Live, Tate Modern, London (2017); Ryuichi Sakamoto + Fujiko Nakaya + Min Tanaka + Shiro Takatani: a•form, Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, New National Museum, Oslo (2017); Keiichi Tahara: Photosynthesis 1978–1980, National Gallery Prague (2017); Takashi Murakami: The 500 Arhats, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2016); and Open Plan: Cecil Taylor, Whitney Museum, New York (2016).
He has received the Asahi Performing Arts Award for his solo dances Shakko (Crimson Light) and Love-Dance School Barn Raising #5, Where We Fall into Transparency from the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, Tokyo (2006); the Kirin Dance Award from Kirin Holdings Co., Ltd., Tokyo (2006) and the Contemporary Art Award from the Japan Arts Foundation, Tokyo (2001).
Tanaka was born in 1945 in the Nakano ward of Tokyo. He continues to live and work in Tokyo.
