Biography
Zhou Tao’s videos explore means to create a dialogue between moving images, addressing the inner workings of systems and topologies through careful study of specific events in manifold perspective. Often presented as multipart displays, Zhou’s works comprise visual and narrative materials that he encounters in his surroundings, reflecting his knowledge of living organisms, natural scenery and inorganic matter.
Zhou’s work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at Sharjah Biennial 13 (2017); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2016); 11th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2016); MoMA and Film Society of Lincoln Center, New York (2015); 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane (2015); 10th Shanghai Biennial (2014); 3rd Mardin Biennial, Turkey (2014); MACBA: Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2015); Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2015); Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (2014) and Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2013), among others.
He received a Jury Award for his film Blue and Red, 54th Ann Arbor Film Festival, US (2016); first prize from the Jury of the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of North Rhine-Westphalia, 61st International Short Film Festival, Oberhausen, Germany (2015) and the first Han Nefkens Foundation BACC Award for Contemporary Art in Asia (2013).
Zhou earned a BFA in oil painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (2001) and an MFA in mixed-media studies (2006).
