Biography
Tayseer Barakat (b. 1959, Gaza) earned his BA in painting from the College of Fine Arts, Helwan University, Alexandria. After completing his studies, he returned to Ramallah to teach and create art. Drawing inspiration from Palestine’s ancient past and heritage, he uses a muted colour palette to depict the harshness of life in his occupied homeland. Barakat co-founded Al-Wasiti Art Center in Jerusalem, Al-Hallaj Hall in Ramallah, Palestinian Association for Contemporary Art (PACA) and International Academy of Arts in Palestine. He has participated extensively in solo and group exhibitions across the world, including Dust, Dialogue and Iron, which won the Alexandria Biennial Prize (2010), as well as the7th Beijing International Art Biennale (2017) and Masters of Palestinian Art, season I, International Art Colony, Budapest (2016). Barakat’s works can be found in several collections, including the Birzeit University Collection, Ramallah; Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah; and Guggenheim, New York.
