Overview

Ming Tiampo is a curator, researcher and writer whose work engages with transcultural models and histories that provide new structures for understanding and reconfiguring the global norms.

Tiampo’s curatorial projects include Inuit Prints: Japanese Inspiration, Canadian Museum of Civilization touring exhibition (2011–2014); Gutai: Splendid Playground, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2013); Under Each Other’s Spell: Gutai and New York, Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, East Hampton, US (2009); ImagiNation: New Cultural Topographies, Carleton University Art Gallery, Ottowa, and University of Toronto (2008); and Electrifying Art: Atsuko Tanaka, 1945–1968, Grey Art Gallery, New York University (2004), among others.

Among her many co-edited books are Gutai: Splendid Playground (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 2013) and Art and War in Japan and Its Empire: 1931–1960 (Brill, 2013). She has also written many books on Japanese modernism, global modernism and diaspora, including Gutai: Decentering Modernism (University of Chicago Press, 2011) and Under Each Other’s Spell: Gutai and New York (Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, 2009).

Tiampo received a number of grants and awards, including a research grant in Worlding Public Cultures: The Arts and Social Innovation from the Trans-Atlantic Platform, Ottawa and The Hague (2019), and awards for the Best Thematic Museum Exhibition in New York for Gutai: Splendid Playground from the Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art, Paris (2013); Best Group Show of the Year (Museum) from the Rob Pruitt Art Awards (2013); and Best Special Museum Exhibition from the Museum Oskars (2013).

She is Professor of Art History at Carleton University, Ottawa. She is also an associate member at ICI Berlin and a founding member of TrACE (Transnational and Transcultural Arts and Culture Exchange) at Carleton University, Ottawa (2018).
Tiampo holds a BA from Princeton University (1995) and an MA and PhD in Art History from Northwestern University, Chicago (1997 and 2003, respectively).

Born in 1973 in Canada, she currently lives and works between Italy and Canada.
