Biography
Ana Torf's media range from slide installation, film, video and photographic series to xerography and silk screen. Existing text is often used as a starting point: a play by Maurice Maeterlinck serves as a source for The Intruder, 2004; the records of an infamous trial inspired Anatomy, 2006 and dialogue from Roberto Rossellini’s 1954 film Viaggio in Italia appears in Displacement, 2009. Since 2009, she has also turned to existing images, working with them in photographic series such as 'Family Plot', 2009–10 and '[. . .] STAIN [. . .]', 2012.
Solo exhibitions include Generali Foundation, Vienna, Austria (2010); K21 – Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, Germany (2010); Sprengel Museum, Hannover, Germany (2008); argos centre for art and media, Brussels (2007); daadgalerie, Berlin, Germany (2006); Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst, Bremen, Germany (2006) and at Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (2000). Her work was also recently featured in Manifesta 9, Genk, Belgium (2012). In 2004, she developed a web project for Dia Art Foundation, New York.
