Kerry Tribe

Biography

Artist and filmmaker Kerry Tribe considers each new project as an experiment, exploring complex subjects through a wide range of highly-restrained forms, including time-based media (multi-channel videos, 16mm films and installations) as well as sculpture, performance and photography. Her work is about finding ways to bring viewers closer to the experiences of others without sacrificing scientific truth, historical accuracy or intellectual criticality.

Tribe’s work has been the subject of solo presentations at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA); The High Line, New York; Carpenter Center for Visual Arts, Cambridge, US; The Power Plant, Toronto; Modern Art Oxford, UK; and Camden Arts Centre, London. Her work is in the public collections of MoMA, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); S.M.A.K., Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art, Ghent, Belgium; and Generali Foundation, Vienna, among other institutions.

Tribe participated in the Presidential Residency at Stanford University and was the Guna S. Mundheim Fellow at the American Academy, Berlin. She also received the Herb Alpert Award and the USA Artists Award.

She has served as visiting faculty at Stanford University, UCLA, CalArts and Harvard University, and she regularly teaches at the ArtCenter in Pasadena, US. She holds a BA from Brown University and an MFA from UCLA. She also attended the Whitney Independent Study Program.

Tribe was born in 1973 in Boston, US. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
