Biography
Architect Yoshiharu Tsukamoto is the co-founder (with Momoyo Kaijima) of Atelier Bow-Wow (est. 1992), a Tokyo-based firm working in fields ranging from architectural design to urban research and the creation of public spaces based on the theory of behaviorology. The atelier has worked on diverse projects both in Japan and internationally.
Tsukamato has participated in a number of exhibitions, including The Japanese House: Architecture and Life after 1945, London and Tokyo (2017); 3rd Istanbul Design Biennale (2016); 15th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia (2016); Wohnungsfrage, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2015) and The State of the Art of Architecture, Chicago Architecture Biennial (2015).
Among his publications are Graphic Anatomy and Graphic Anatomy 2 (TOTO Publishing, 2007 and 2014), Commonalities (LIXIL Publishing, 2014) and Behaviorology (Rizzoli New York, 2010).
Tsukamoto is a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (2015–present) and visiting professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, New York (2017–present). Previously he was a visiting professor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Cambridge, US (2016), Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands (2015) and Rice University, Houston (2014). He was a visiting critic at Cornell University, Ithaca, US (2014).
Tsukamoto earned his first degree from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1987 and received a postgraduate degree in 1994, and Dr. Engineering in 1996 from the same institution.
Born in 1965 in Kanagawa, Japan, he currently lives and works in Tokyo.
