Biography
Founded in 2003 by artist Matt Clark, UVA (United Visual Artists) integrates new technologies with traditional media such as painting, sculpture, performance and site-specific installation. Rather than material objects, UVA’s works are better understood as events in time, in which a performance of light, sound and movement unfolds.
UVA has been commissioned to produce works for institutions such as the Barbican Curve Gallery, London; Manchester International Festival; Royal Academy of Arts, London; Serpentine Gallery, London; The Wellcome Trust, London; Towner Gallery, Eastbourne, UK; Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM), Japan.
UVA’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and festivals, including Other Spaces, 180 The Strand, London (2019); Québec City Film Festival, Canada (2019); The Moon, National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, UK (2019); XXII Triennale, Milan (2019); Counterparts, bitforms gallery, New York (2018); Spirit of the City, A/D/O, Brooklyn, US (2018); and A Beautiful Elsewhere, The Power Station of Art, Shanghai (2018).
UVA’s work can be found in the collections of Fondation Cartier, Paris, and the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), Hobart, Australia. Public works are sited internationally in Toronto, Dubai, Philadelphia and London.
In addition to Clark (b. 1974), other members of UVA include Maximo Recio (b. 1981), Willem Kempers (b. 1993), Lee Sampson (b. 1989), Jon Skerritt (b. 1990) and Holly Brearley (b. 1992). They all live and work in London.
