Biography
Sharif Waked’s work, reflects on power, politics and the everyday, often creating junctions between particular moments in the present and cultural references from the past. By overturning established notions of aesthetics and juxtaposing historical implications with the artifacts of politics as events are taking place, Waked constantly questions the absurd realities of conflict, often with sharply observed humor.
Waked’s work has been exhibited at the OFF-Biennale Budapest (2017); VIII CachoeiraDoc, Brazil (2017); Museum of Applied Arts, Frankfurt (2016); Warsaw Museum of Modern Art, Poland (2015); KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin (2015); Wolverhampton Art Gallery, UK (2014); Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark (2014); Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence, France (2013); Singapore Art Museum (2013); Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan (2012); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2011); Queensland Art Gallery, Australia (2010); Royal Academy of Arts, London (2010); Queens Museum of Art, New York City (2009); Sharjah Biennial (2003, 2009) among others.
Waked was born in Nazareth in 1964. He currently lives and works in Haifa and Santa Barbara, US.
